The Remote Yogi; Quieting Your Anxiety

Co-existing With Other Hogwarts Houses

In third grade, I was the new kid in school.   I remember walking up to a few kids on the playground, one being Taryn Raine, and observing them play ‘Harry Potter’.

I remember them telling me I could play with them as long I was the Hufflepuff, to which as an eight year who had not yet learned to appreciate Hufflepuffs, I was deeply offended.  But of course, back then everyone wanted to be a Gryffindor, I had no clue I was actually a Ravenclaw, and I eventually learned to co-exist with other houses.

Taryn was always a Slytherin, (clever, ambitious, outgoing) though I believe we both dressed as Hermione for Halloween that year… (who didn’t?)  As an adult she actually got a tattoo of the dark mark on her forearm which represents a little more than her love for Harry Potter.

Beyond the Darkness

“I got it specifically so that people would ask me about it,” She tells me, “I come off as such a glowy person, people who are new to me or who don’t know me too well are surprised to find out I’ve struggled with mental illness, depression, anxiety.”

“For me it covers physical scars but it also allows me to help people.”

“People are often taken back by something so nasty and dark on my arm, they ask me about it and I’m able to share with them my story, dealing with depression, and open up the opportunity for them to share with me their depression or whatever they’re going through.”

A Serendipitous Moment 

Taryn also helps people through the business she started known as ‘The Remote Yogi’ which not only offers people a wide range of yoga outlets but also includes lifestyle tips and a community that Taryn is proud to have built.

At the age of 18 Taryn says while working out at the YMCA at the downtown ASU campus, she accidentally walked into the wrong workout class and had been too embarrassed to walk out.

This class ended up being Taryn’s very first experience with yoga, “My anxiety was quieted immediately which is something I had never experienced before, I was hooked.”

 

 

The Remote Yogi

Approximately eight years later after her first yoga class, Taryn is now an established yoga instructor and is helping people discover the benefits of yoga on a daily basis.

I asked Taryn how the idea of ‘The Remote Yogi’ came to be to which she explained, “Taryn Raine Yoga was the blog I had before this. I also had a home yoga studio in Maricopa, teaching 8 times a week between gyms and my studio, but when I wanted to pick up and travel, I decided I wanted continue to teach from wherever I am in the world.”

In the last year Taryn has traveled to 18 different countries and has been able to continue to teach her ‘tribe members’ along her journey.

“Remote is kind of like that idea of being anywhere, the remote yogi tribe is the membership I created to make it more accessible in a way that was more relatable to different lifestyles.”

A Tribe of her own

Taryn says that being part of the tribe includes yoga tutorials of different lengths for different lifestyles, as well as meditation and life style tips, vegan meal plans, and even a monthly live call with Taryn where she says she likes to pour a glass of wine and give what advice she can to her tribe members.

Membership for her ‘tribe’ is available on her site and is only $20 a month.  Taryn mentioned she also offers free trial periods for people to test it out and see if it’s for them.

Taryn is genuinely invested in her tribe members as well as her followers on social media, especially Instagram.  She is constantly sharing positive thoughts, creative ideas, and beautiful adventures in new towns.

She told me that in creating The Remote Yogi she not only wanted to create a place for people to easily access yoga but to create a community and be a resource for people to reach out to.

Taryn also shared her favorite style of yoga with me along with eye opening advice for beginners who would like to be a yogi as well but don’t quite know how to approach it.  These topics and more (such as meditation tips and more of Taryn’s personal journey) will be shared in a second post later this week.
